musicjunkie Comments on Other's Remixes
Thanks Scarborough. I did play the guitar solo line . . . and I sincerely hope I haven't offended any electric guitar players here
with my attempt to play a lead guitar solo on a violin!
Great job! Don't understand why this is not hotpick! I love all the ideas and sounds you put in there. Nice change at 2:36 and breakdown at 3:04. If you could only have the cello solo played by a real cello that would make it a perfect mix! Still, a solid 5!
Thanks all, for your comments.
Colab, thanks for your honest comments. I do agree that some of the male vocals did not sound too natural after the pitch-shifting. I think that might have something to do with the natural lilts, which were almost like grace notes applied to fiddle tunes, that Chris had when he sang the song based on a minor key.
The idea behind the rock beat/distortion violin solo was the brief night of passion the maiden and the soldier had!
Once again, brilliant stuff, Doghouse! I just love the way you twisted and mangled the vocal lines in such a tasteful way! Well done. 5/5 without a doubt!
Quite a wonderful mix! Well done. It's dark, it's humourous, it's sexy, it's groovy. Love those strings. Certainly cinematic - it makes me think of "12 Monkeys" and French movie "Delicatessen". 5 stars!
Great job! I like it a lot. You paid a lot of attention to details to make it interesting throughout.
Very cool mix! I like the change at 2:00 and the return of the bass line at 3:30
This is classic Loveshadow! Great groove and a killer bass line.
I also love the soundscape created by the stretched vocals and the strings - dark and mysterious, yet seductive!
Great job! I am loving the groove, the chord progression and the instrumentation. It's late at night here or I would've cranked up the volume!
I guess I'll do that tomorrow morning! Well done.
Hey Doghouse/L-D . . . sorry me a bit fashionably late for the party! Just started to catch up on all the listenin' and all, and this is one hot mix (and I didn't mean the volume!) Well done, lads!
P.S. DH, look what you did to L-D, he now talks like you, wails like you . . . what's next? Finish each other's sentences?
Nice work. Great job in using only sample pack material. Very groovy!
Great mix! I like it a lot. Interesting that we both start with some water sounds in our mixes (well, mine is more like a river while yours is referring to the sea
but anyway . . . ) yet we went in two very different directions. I really like the alternate bassline (or bass solo or whatever you call it) at 3:29. 5 stars from me!
Thanks all, for your kind comments. And Doghouse, you never told me what champagne you liked. If you don't speak up, I am gonna send you that yucky pink stuff!
5 stars all the way! Great playing and wonderful arrangement. Your tone and intonation are astounding! Not to mention the expression and soul with which you played the parts! Well done.
Beautiful mix. Great beat (and heartbeat)!
Excellent mix. I like the rises and falls. 5 stars from me!
Great job! Nice groove and melodies. I wish it were a bit longer though
Great sounding mix! Excellent vibe.
Nice work! A fresh approach to harmonizing the original melody. I like it!
Nice work Nebulo! Very interesting mix indeed. Refreshing arrangement and instrumentation. I like it a lot!
I echo the sentiments expressed by both Loveshadow and Scarborough. It was a pleasure indeed to work with both of them (over cyberspace) and our friends. May the spirit of Enos live on!
Nope, at least not from my perspective, otherwise I wouldn't have spent over 30 hrs arranging, recording, editing and mixing it.
Thanks for all your comments. I felt lucky and honoured to be mentioned by PG. I couldn't have done this mix without my friends' help - Steve McNie on his Steinberger bass, Iris Rodrigues on vocals at the end.
For what you're trying to achieve - you've done a great job! You've vividly portrayed the crazy state of mind of the monkey and the feeling of despair, frustration and emotional turmoil.
Loveshadow, congratulations!! As I have commented before on this mix, I really like it. I also loved your Darwin's Lament. They both gave me goosebumps! To Scarborough, I've responded to your e-mail regarding the score. Yeah I'd love to have a go at it.
I like this mix - I like what you did to the lead vox. Sounds like he's a bit shaken or he's trembling/shivering. Very cool. The harp is a nice touch too. What I can't believe is this has only been listened to 106 times since Aug 09?? OH well, good job!
Wow . hats off to you!!
Thanks Scarborough. You seem to be very good at picking up different sounds and effects. But one thing I'm not sure if you spotted - the sirens at 2:27 were actually done on the violin - my studio is near a fire station and normally there's no shortage of fire trucks passing by, you would think it wouldn't be hard to get siren noises, but the night I was recording/mixing - not a fire truck in sight the whole night, so I picked up my violin!
Thanks very much, Scarborough, for your kind words (here and on Monkey in the City). This mix in particular captured my mood at the time when doing all the mixes - because I needed a laugh break, so why not have some fun with it?! And you COMPLETELY captured the gist of this mix, including the "Game Over" sound! Hope your husband enjoys this as much as you do! P.S. I probably should've done 3 mixes and not 4 - in these games you usually get 3 lives don't you?!
Doghouse, you're really pushin' it!! We started off with a bottle of wine at the bar you quickly moved on to champagne! (Let me see you walk a straight line please?) Ok ok, . I guess you deserve a champagne toast now, Mr. Runner-up!! Well done Doghouse!
Great mix!! Now that's a daring move - turning this into a 3/4 tune and using so many original elements too - and that it works! Well done.
i like the sound of this, but i think the bass and drums sound a bit "distant" in the mix.
Come to think of it, no - it's not hard at all - this one WILL be in my top ten!
Nice fresh approach and great new chords. I LOVE the bass line!! Dang, you're making it very hard for me to build (or rebuild) my top ten!! Wonderful job!!!
Nice arrangement! I like the synth/muted guitar lines. Well done.
Nice job. Great idea to mix in the samples from other packs. There seems to be a bit of timing/sync issue at 3:00 but overall I like the mix - but like you said in your notes, maybe that's when the monkey gets a bit crazy!
Love it! Great vibe! My top ten too!
Very nice one!! I keep discovering these gems I mised a couple of days while sorting through the pages . I like it a lot. Just the right mood and orchestration. You get 4 monkeys here!
As if Peter Gabriel got together with M. Night Shyamalan (director - the 6th Sense, the Village) and made this! Very cool!
Excellent! It's interesting, tasteful and well done!
I think the rating of this boring mix is finally dropping and other better mixes are rising. Thank God there are still plenty of legitimate voters out there that hadn't voted before Loic's fans flooded the site.
Very beautiful and simple. Nice rearrangment of lyrics.
Those darn opera composers - so morbid!!!
Ahhhh too bad this came in late! Great mix. Edgy!
I come back to listen to this every couple of days! It's just great!
Hey I'm glad I'm able to inject some laughter into this sometimes intense and serious competition! Cheers!
Thanks for all the comments - you guys made me feel like Donkey Kong bouncing through the forest again!!
I like it a lot. The cello arrangement is very cool. I LOVE the ensemble pizz. It gives it another dimension, a bit of mystery, and the staccato makes it edgy. I also like the part from 1:38 to 2:13 with long sustained notes against the pizz. I wouldn't worry too much about the sync - besides, a real string ensemble doing pizz. together would never be 100% in sync!! (Yep, I'm a string player too!)
I was kidding of course . re: your comment on the violin on Don José!
Very nice mix! One of my top ten for sure. I like the arrangement, the playing, mood, groove, and production. 4 stars from me!
P.S. Is the guitar real?
Great work. Not to take anything away from remixes that contain elements of the original but are arranged in completely different forms (I've been doing that throughout this competition), it's much harder to rebuild something from scratch and make it better. Your attention to details and tasteful craftsmenship pays off yet again! (I compare this to people who specialize in restoring 300-year-old paintings!)
This mix keeps drawing me back! (Even the "Picardi 3rd" at the end is growing on me!!!) Nice work L-S. Yup, still in my top ten.
I love it! All I can say is it deserves more than the 2.5 stars it's got!
Very nice arrangement! I like it. Cool effects with the distortion guitar and distorted vocals (which I think were intentional, right?) against the smooth choir and orchestra.
Sometimes jealousy can drive one to irrational behaviour, and that's the sense I get out of listening to this mix. I like the ambient backing music a lot - so discordent (and disturbing) - says a lot about internal conflict and struggles. If this is the picture you're trying to paint, then you've bloody well done it!
Good stuff.
lol! glad i could help, LS.
LOL . Doghouse, you're killin' me! hahaha . Thanks.
Fantastic work! I like it a lot. A mysterious air to it. Good arrangement.
Great job, Matrixx! I know you said it was extremely busy, but you know what, even though there is a ton of stuff going on, it didn't feel too busy at all. Everything just fit together nicely. I like the little surprises here and there with your pitch-shifting of the lead vox - awesome!
Very nice treatment of the original elements of the song in a new direction.
Nice mix. Very trippy. I like it a lot!
One more thing - I LOVE the chinese instruments, the beautiful female voice and what sounds like a Taiko drum in it!!
I listened to it a few times and it grew on me, big time! I love the sound, the production and the ideas. Regarding the comments on drums/percussions, I don't mind the techno/dance beats coming in; after all, this type of fusion is something I can picture Afro Celt or an awesome Australian group called Oka doing. However, I think there is a fine line between being creative/colourful and lacking cohesiveness. In this case, I think it's a bit too varied for my taste - you could have introduced the dance beat and then stuck with it for a bit longer, let it sit for a while, instead of going back and forth between the 5 groove patterns (I include the ambience, no-drums portion as one) every 30 seconds or so. Great work though. I'm halfway between 3 and 4 monkeys
Thanks for your comments. I guess what I was trying to create or depict between 1:46 and 2:44 is the craziness of the city, chaos and all the BS, and the Monkey's state of mind! He's going . um . bananas at that point!
I loved the whole mix . until the last note!! I dunno, something about that Major ending that seemed to break the sultry mood you so wonderfully created throughout the song, like, it's too sweet or too Baroque. Everything else was great though up to that point. I love the guitars, the smoothness of the tune, and the groove. Anyways, that's just me.
Wow!!
It's fun. It's quirky. Very nice mix, I like the rhythm and instrumentation. Great flow and energy.
Ferris Bueller running home!
Excellent work! Great ideas and production. TagPass said this before and I agree: "Epic"!
It has some very nice ideas and moments; great production quality too, but I am wondering if there are too many ideas inserted. Some of the grooves, like the reggae sections and the heavy rock bits can probably stand on their own as separate remixes - and they would make awesome remixes too. Just a thought.
Nice job! Simple, lots of space, but very effective in bringing out the vox. Keep it up!
Great mix! I like the rhythm a lot and the production is good. The only thing I'd change is perhaps the outro - maybe a bit more variation toward the end. But overall, I like it a lot :)
I like some of the ideas and sounds from the keyboard and drum tracks, but I am curious as to why you wanted to create a more or less instrumental version of the song?
Great work and very creative . that's what I call "think outside the box"! I am a fiddler/violinist and I'd love to put some real fiddle on that track.
My favourite chord progression on this tune so far! Very cool. Love the strings and the vibe. Good production too. I can really chill to remix. Sip some Martini .
Great work!

Good point, LS! Maybe I should add some wolf-howling or bed-creaking noises to accompany Chris' vocals!
