Multiman Comments on Other's Remixes

well thats just brilliant! Really nice control in the production and a ton of imagination. The ending where the music (and characters and story) just dissolves into the thunder is fantastic. I personally like the heavier stuff. I think it sits well in the context of the whole form. Great job!!

that was intense. Im also glad I dont live where you do! Lots of ideas. Nice job!

Thankyou for all the comments. I really appreciate them.

Although I do enjoy screaming from time to time (who doesn't) Im not completely sure which scream or organ people are referring to. If its the 'waaahh' sound in the two chorus bits, I just used a couple of old samples. I dont recall their original source - possibly some spectral processing of a voice or choir - sorry I cant be any more specific. If you mean the screaming over the aggressive grungy bit, I used a simple guitar feedback device, a bit like an Ebow but basically a small transducer held against the string that makes the guitar scream out at the harmonic nodal points.

Mr Alpha. Very nice mix. I like the sound fx at the transitions and the contrast between sections. Great ending too! Well done.

I love the texture at the start. Some tasty loops going on there in places and the bass line adds a nice intensity. Im also not so sure about the extreme L R panning. It sounds good on speakers but not so good on headphones, perhaps adding in a little bit of very quick delay in the opposite channel would help with the imaging?

nice atmosphere. The music and vocals have a strange flow between connection and disconnection. I like the ending a lot.

love the fade out too. btw

Brilliant!. Seems somehow redundant to praise your amazing vocal manipulation skills when they sit right next to this kind of musicianship and real subtle sense of satire - but I will anyhow!. Dogs surely can hear some things way out of human range.

Thanks for the comments!

Ah yes, crazy chicken - Her name was Florence. She performed well both in the studio and on the dinner plate.

Congratulations Spinmeister!

Congratulations Schras!!!!

fantastic remix and a well deserved prize!!

All the best to you.

Congrats Oxxo!!

Nice job!

All the Best!

Congratulations Loveshadow!!

I always thought this mix had something special about it.

Best wishes.

Congratulations Christof McCello!!!!

Its a unique track and really outstanding in the truest sense of the word. We are lucky to have a musician of your calibre here.

Like a soundtrack to an experimental video art installation. I imagine all kinds of glitchy images that could go with this. I like the ending too.

I love the harmonic progression - really unexpected but fits the melody so effortlessly. The shifts in texture between sections work so well too. Excellent stuff!

Nothing sleepy about it. Very fine musicianship and production craft. Everything sits just perfectly - also probably the most eloquent and sincere notes I've read. I hope we get to hear more of your work soon.

A brilliant interpretation of limited source material. Its really an outstanding original track in its own right. There really are some incredibly talented people around here!!

I like the big contrasts. Nicely shaped. I'm a bit of a sucker for a big rousing anthemic choruses. Well done.

dreamy creamy and crunchy. Delicious!

Beautiful atmos.

agree with the others - Classy and tasteful. Nice and clean mix. I wanted it to go on and on.

Reminds me a bit of a Wim Wenders film - not sure why. I like the setting it creates. The clashes in tonality dont bother me as I see it more as a layering of imagery. Nice.

This sounds really fresh to my ears. carefully chosen sounds and fx and a great form. I'd like to hear more too!

very very very very very good!!!

Im not sure why no one has commented. I like the unusual rhythmic placement of the vocals over the beat at the beginning but find the changes in beat/tempo/metre a bit disorienting. Great to hear real instruments!

A very fluid sound. The piano and organ and the ebow guitar are nice additions. The changes at 2'40 and back again at 3'19 work really well for me giving shape to the whole form making it compelling to listen to. Really love that last section though!!

Really effective use of multiple time signatures! Love the huge contrast between sections and of course, the amplitubed vocals!!!

Exciting mix! The production really sparkles. The trumpet lifts everything way up into the stratosphere. Nice job.

Nicely understated. Really refreshing to hear the vocals free from the tyranny of a fixed (or fixated?) time signature.

Sublime distance and space. Very complementary to my mood right now. I like this very much.

The granular approach certainly adds tension on top of the rhythm section. Its got a distinct personality and I think overall it works quite well.

Beautiful cinematic quality. I really like the form too - there is a sense of almost perfect balance to it.

Very tasteful. I like that you havent tried to push the vocals into a stiff rhythmic structure but creatively worked around their natural flow. It actually makes me want to listen to the words.

Love the tiny droplets and the hanging atmosphere. - i have to agree with Doghouse though, I wanted it to leap out of the box and scare the bejesus out of me at some point - but the quiet restraint keeps a nice kind of tension going.

The mix is cohesive. Not outstanding in its own right, but taken it as one element in, what I am guessing is intended to be, a bigger picture it makes the whole journey quite interesting. You obviously have quite an imagination there. I like the fact that you have pushed the song out of its purely musical boundaries.

Oh, and personally, I think your curriculum is quite interesting.

I hope the machines get an organic smile someday too :-)

Lots of ideas! Some fairly solid textures too. I like the contrasts a lot. It kept me guessing till the very end.

Im loving these real instrument mixes. Makes me want to throw my computer out a hotel window.

Mr House, I must declare this remix to be both rooting AND tooting to the highest degree.

Nice One!

I have no idea why I like this. Its cheeky but somehow it hangs together. It reminds me of a band here in New Zealand called The Clean.

A great big broad mix overall. Fantastic that you are being really brave with the structure. Some really nice surprises in here. An intrepid journey!

Andreas. I like this a lot. Im sorry not to have heard it earlier. Its a powerful dynamic piece. You clearly put a lot of passion into your work (and from your PM I suspect your life too) and it shows. Impressive.

Beautiful understated rhythm. Love the depth and placement of sounds in their place. Very placing to my ears.

A nice homogenous mix. I like the hypnotic rhythm. The compression/limiting is a bit much for me but the arrangement works well.

I like that you think about these songs and recontextualise them (if thats the right term)beyond the music - rather than just throw a few sounds together. Makes the listening experience far more personal. Thanks. Very nice mix.

Nice big full sounding mix. Craftily Skillful and Skilfully Crafty. I like it.

4 strings and a bit of wood. What an amazing plugin.

Very stylish. Clearly oozing talent in all departments - that goes for your other remixes too. Well done Christof.

Now I want an Austrian Beer.

I really like the atmosphere and the guitar motif. Nice depth.

Wow. Quite a virtuosic production. Definitely got my attention!

I like rhythms and meters that make me forget how to walk properly. This sets up a great rhythmic tension that doesnt let go. The live feel is very refreshing too. I like it.

Thanks everyone. Its good to be back!

Thanks for all the continuing comments and emails! Yes the Duende has arrived and although I havent had a chance to make good use of it yet I can see that it will be a very useful piece of kit. I havent been resting on my laurels either. I have been working intensely on my own music - which has been spurred along by this success, and Im hoping to launch some of it out into the ether sometime in the new year. I'm a lurker at RWRM at the moment. I do want to have another go at a remix but would like to wait until another Gabriel track is up since its the music I am most familiar with. Many thanks once again.

Thanks everyone. Im overwhelmed.

Nice modal shift. Big open sounding mix. I love the tension it creates.

I like the mood. Like the Kalimba. Love the distorted sound at 3:40. Lots of subtlety. Nice.

I really like this one. The swung rhythm is great but there is something about the atmosphere that seems to work with the vocals in an odd, but very compelling, way - I cant quite put my finger on it. Nice!

Thanks everyone.

Nrevk Niatpak - the sound is a sample of something I dont remember Im afraid, I made it so long ago. Probably some kind of flute yes.

Interesting to read comments about the vocal distortion. I spent a long time on this. Clean vocals (or any other effect I could find) just sat on top like oil on water. I wanted to push the song in an 'earthy' direction but the vocal performance, although intense in its own way, just didnt quite sit. Clipping it like this brought out more of the guts I was looking for, and created wider contrasts between the sections.

Great choice of textures. Really nice form, and of course the time sig change which shifts your perception - which is always good for people listening to the same song over and over and over and over! well done!!

My favourite so far. Really great effort squeezing a song like this into something so unique. For me its a very successful transformation of the original but without altering its intent. Really nice job!!

haaa. very good! slick and witty. Nice job.

Polished, clever, brilliant!

Thank you all for the encouraging comments. I just wanted to say that all of the samples/recordings in my mix were made by me - some date back almost 20 years!

Sorry Simg. I misread your comment.

Sorry, I didnt think I was being immodest, just wanted to share a thought I had. :-] I appreciate the comment though.

Thanks for the comments. Its a strange thing after listening to all these remixes and being amazed at the diversity, I realised that classic songs like this ultimately belong to the audience. Each individual eventually imposes his or her own personal significance on it. I imagine it must be a difficult thing for a writer like Gabriel who spends so much time and effort on crafting these songs, to relinquish this sense of ownership and perhaps introduce a fear of being misunderstood. Remixes might be the most honest form of criticism or praise a songwriter can get.
